On August 4th, 1981, a “Buffet Dinner and Organization Meeting of the Zonta Club of Footscray” was held at Le Jardin Receptions, commencing with “Sherries and Savouries”.
The meeting agreed to apply for Charter Membership of Zonta International. The certificates of membership to 25 women were issued on 28th September and the Charter Dinner held in great syle in May, 1982 – evening dress and black tie, at Ascot House. Among those charter members were Footscray’s first female councillor (1972), a first female Mayor (1984) and several women of note who were well known community advocates. Our current President is a charter member who has served on the District 23 Board.
The celebration of its milestone 30th birthday in 2011, enabled past and present members, including 2 charter members, to review major achievements which have benefitted women and their families since 1981 and to strengthen networks, affiliations and friendships within the Zonta family and in the broader community
Over time, more members joined from the surrounding western suburbs, and a name change was necessary to reflect the contribution of women from across the region. The Zonta Club of Melbourne’s West was born, with activities now occurring mainly around the municipalities of Hobsons Bay, Wyndham and Maribyrnong. Projects include hands-on and material assistance, most often liaising and working with local service providers and in supporting Zonta International biennium goals.
